About Nicole

Writer & Dreamer

Hey, there

I live in Southwest Washington state with my husband and two sons, along with my two purebred Arabian horses, chickens, ducks, dogs, cats, and guinea pigs. As a long-time horse owner, I've been involved in several horse organizations throughout my life, including serving as a Clark County Fair Court Princess and Miss Teen Rodeo Washington.

When I'm not writing or tending the animals, I works in human resources. A journalism major, I've received several national and regional awards for my nonfiction writing from American Horse Publications and the Society of Professional Journalists.

Check out my short stories from Revell, too!

Meet Grunnion

Grunnion and I met hours after his birth in the year 2000. He was rejected by his mother and then bottle fed by the barn staff (of which I happened to be.) I adopted him when he was three years old and we’ve been partners ever since. He’s part dog, part soccer-ball-kicking-horse-extraordinnaire.

Things I Love

Stories

I believe stories bring us all closer together — and in the place where animals and history meet, magic happens.

History

In knowing our history, we create a better future. I’ve been drawn to the history of horses and the role they’ve played in moving humankind forward.

Hope

In gratitude, we gain perspective. In perspective, we gain insight. Through it all, we find hope and love.

Meet Rocky

Rocky is the dependable and somewhat ornery Arabian gelding who has spent a lot of his life as a lesson horse and now kids mount. He’s as lazy as they come (especially for high-strung Arabians) and yet adores all the neighbor miniature horses.

My History With Horses

My first horse was a purebred Arabian mare with a pension for scraping me out of the saddle on trail rides. She taught me so much and every other horse has influenced my life in so many ways.

More about me

I served as the editor in chief of the student newspaper and magazine at Western Washington University, where I graduated with my journalism degree and was named the Outstanding Graduate of 2008.

I have freelanced for various local and national publications such as the Northwest Horse Source, the Bellingham Herald, Whatcom Magazine, Holistic Horse. In 2007, I won the national Student Award from the American Horse Publications and also placed in the Society of Professional Journalist’s Mark of Excellence competition. I placed again in the SPJ Mark of Excellence competition in 2008 and placed first in my category for the American Horse Publications.

I completed my first novel in the sixth grade and never quit. At the same time, I began riding, training and showing Arabian horses throughout the Pacific Northwest.

“A horse is worth more than riches.”
