Nightingale Esther Lange doesn’t love her fiancé—she’s trapped in an engagement after a mistaken night of passion. Still, she grieves him when he’s lost in battle, the letters sent to her by the medic at his side giving her a strange comfort, so much that she strikes up a correspondence with Peter Hess, an Iowa farmboy. Or is he? Peter Hess is not who he seems. Indeed, he’s hiding a secret, something that could cost them both their lives, especially when the past comes back to life. A bittersweet love song of the home front war between duty and the heart…a battle where only one will survive.
My Review:
In my eyes, Susan May Warren simply can do no wrong. On top of being a masterful storyteller, she’s a teacher, speaker and creator of My Book Therapy, a website for encouraging and inspiring other writers. She’s simply amazing.
I was blessed to attend her coaching class at this past OCW Summer Conference, where I learned more about storytelling in three days than I had in three years.
She was also awarded an ACFW Carol Award for Sons of Thunder – one of my all-time favorites.
Wait – is this a review of Susie or Nightingale?
Back to the book.
Nightingale is a spectacular story of how past choices ripple far into the future. Warren deals with very real and very intense issues we have faced throughout history. Set against the backdrop of World War II, which is so often romanticized and painted in a pretty picture, this story reveals the social pressures and repercussions of a mistake.
Complete with classic Susan May Warren twists, suspense and surprises, this book will grip you from start to finish. You’ll see a new side to the homefront during the most devastating war of the century.
If you love history, romance, suspense and beautiful writing, pick this one up. (Or any of Susan May Warren’s books, to be completely honest.)
I LOVED this book, too Nicole! Susan May Warren has quickly made it to the top of my author list with these last two WWII stories!
