Pampered Margaret Macy flees London in disguise to escape pressure to marry a dishonorable man. With no money and nowhere else to go, she takes a position as a housemaid in the home of Nathaniel Upchurch, a suitor she once rejected in hopes of winning his dashing brother. Praying no one will recognize her, Margaret fumbles through the first real work of her life. If she can last until her next birthday, she will gain an inheritance from a spinster aunt–and sweet independence. But can she remain hidden as a servant even when prying eyes visit Fairbourne Hall?
Observing both brothers as an “invisible” servant, Margaret learns she may have misjudged Nathaniel. Is it too late to rekindle his admiration? And when one of the family is nearly killed, Margaret alone discovers who was responsible. Should she come forward, even at the risk of her reputation and perhaps her life? And can she avoid an obvious trap meant to force her from hiding?
My Review:
This novel was one of the highlights of my past week. It was the perfect escape. The perfect story with the perfect amount of romance and intrigue. Thank you, Julie! I needed this one.
Klassen creates a story with real characters, vivid historical detail and unique twists and turns. Margaret is a character that truly develops and changes by the end of the book. The royalty falls to the level of a servant and sees the world in a different light.
After page one, I was swept up into the tale and it held my interest to the very last page. The tension and threat of her secret being revealed made for a delicious backdrop. The hero, Nathaniel, is a character you can’t help but love. Gallant but stubborn—flawed but so real—he brings out the best and worst of Margaret and complements her in all the right ways. The makings of a memorable, genuine story.
Pirates, poetry, masquerade balls, duels and chamber pots. What’s not to love about this book? Whether or not you’re a big Regency fan, this story will delight and hold you captive.

Thanks so much Nicole. Great review. I especially like the line: “Pirates, poetry, masquerade balls, duels and chamber pots. What’s not to love about this book?” 🙂
Perhaps that could be the tag line! 😉 Just kidding. But seriously enjoyed your book, Julie! As I always do!
