Last Friday I delivered a presentation about marketing and building your online presence. It was a hectic day — lots of last-minute requests and running around for various projects.
I was also a bit distracted all day, gearing up for the presentation.
One businessman, who was there for a vendor fair, stopped me as I walked by and said, “Don’t take this the wrong way, but you have the most beautiful smile. I’m a great-grandpa, so it’s okay for me to say things like that.”
Well, I’m sure you can imagine my smile only got bigger.
It meant a lot. It helped boost my confidence just a bit more. It was something little that I needed that day.
This made me realize that I need to return the favor — I need to give away compliments more often.
I challenge you, too! Let’s make one sincere, spontaneous compliment to a friend {bonus points for strangers} each day. And please, don’t make some public wall post that your friends all will see. Be secretly incredible.
What is the most sincere, spontaneous comment you’ve ever received?
I think I already told you this story. My favorite compliment came from a complete stranger when I had the kids out hiking one day at Mary Young Park. Out of the blue this guy stopped me and thanked me for being a good mom. He said “it’s the most important job” and then he went on his way. I think God was trying to get through to me that no matter how hard it was, no matter how much the kids were bickering, I was still out there trying to build memories and I just needed a little reminder that I was making a difference in my kids’ lives. Because of that “out of the blue” compliment and others, I’ve definitely tried to give more compliments when they come to my mind. I feel like God wants to use me in those moments and it’s best to follow the prompts he’s giving me.
