Time for an overall report of the homestead!
Chickens:
In chicken news, we for sure have two roosters now: Hawkeye and Penguin.
We love them both dearly but may be re-homing Penguin as he’s the less friendly of the two and rather large for our medium to small hens. We know of a nice, small farm where he will be well loved. 🙂
The layers are all growing well and remaining as plucky and adventurous as ever. So adventurous, we had to string up some bird netting over the 4-foot fence that they like to hop over. Thankfully, we don’t have neighbors on either side of our property, otherwise they might complain about the constant intruders.
Garden:
The garden has been a bit neglected this year, perhaps because we were overly ambitious with our seeds and now have 100+ pepper plants and 15 or so tomatoes… There will be a lot of canning in our future.
Still, things are coming into bloom nicely!
Ducks:
The ducks are still some of the most delightful entertainment in the homestead. They are constantly quacking (sometimes louder than the rooster’s crowing even!).
While not incredibly friendly, they are still more curious lately and I can “trick” them to come closer if I pretend to toss out some treats (even if I’m just tossing some grass I plucked… mean, I know, but wouldn’t you want to have these little things waddle up to you?)
Then we played a little in with the garden watering hose – and the ducks loved it.
There’s never a dull moment around here. 🙂 Will send more updates as the layers get closer to laying… and garden starts producing. 🙂
