Lady in the Mist released from Baker Publishing February 1, 2011 and has already been picked up by Crossings Book Club and by Thorndike Press for large print.
The whole thing started thirteen years ago. I was in graduate school studying history with the duel purpose of wanting to write more serious historical fiction, so wanting more knowledge, and possibly teaching history. I do both now, but not as I expected. But that’s a different story.
My first semester, I took two classes—Research Methods and The History of Medicine. In the former, I had to write a long research paper. In the other, I had to create a project, a lesson plan for an on-line course in the history of medicine.
For the research class, I thought about something on the Huguenots. I’d found a diary of a Huguenot in an antique bookstore a couple years earlier and was fascinated enough to write two papers on them for undergrad history courses. For the history of medicine class, I’d come across a copy of Laurel Ulrich’s interpretation of Martha Ballard’s Diary, A Midwife’s Tale and decided to do a midwife project.
Not a bit of a connect between, yet these two diverse topics led me to the seed which would need germination and the right climate, and nourishment to sprout into an idea, let alone a novel.
